Beyond Boundaries (NL)

Anneke Herold is showing her work in Baarle Nassau at High Five Art

Still life with three vases
Stilleven met drie Vazen

Anneke Herrold

Netherlands

Hand- and machine stitched cotton

Her theme is often indoor/outdoor which is enhanced by color, a window motif or other designer elements. The search for balance is the resilience and challenge for her work. The work process gives peace of mind on the one hand, but the endless possibilities of textile art also create curiosity and tension.

Flox den Hartog is showing in Baarle Nassau at High Five Art

Persephone

Flox den Hartog Jager
Netherlands

Machine- and hand-embroidered,
cotton, pe yarn, cotton embroidery yarn

Persephone sails with Charon – the ferryman- across the river Styx over and enters the realm of ghosts, the Hades, (search for the myth of Persephone https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persephone_(mythologie) ).

The background is a black piece of fabric that is completely machine-stitched with white thread and here and there a somewhat thicker woollen, cotton or colored thread.

I walked into the realm of the dead with my love. He stayed there and i had to leave again. Now I live as Persophene in two worlds. Now in the dark kingdom of ghosts, then again on the cheerful Olympus that he and I built, and am amazed that the world is flourishing again.

My work provided the crucial link between my interest in textiles, art and architecture.

I get inspiration from everyday topics and developed a recognizable style which enhances the theme and has its own specific charisma.

For me it is a challenge to make textile pieces of art with surprising effects.

I  would like to lead the spectator to a visual confrontation. Whether the result is completely abstract or reality made abstract, the meaning will become clear by itself. It is my expressive way of a story in image

Even my studio is in Dordrecht the oldest city of Holland.

My works travel all over the world. They can be seen in museums, galleries, textile events, private institutions and of course everyone can buy them.

Detail Reflect

My work is designed to give a sense of place and mood, pared down to a simple design element - the relationship of form and colour.

“Reflect” - A time for stopping. A time to pause and reflect. To hold the moment, be oblivious to the world around, and listen to oneself.

Take a step back and focus on just one image - until the thought starts to break and drift away

This work can be seen in Baarle Nassau.

Following the period of intense painting and printmaking in the beginning of my artistic career, for over thirty years now I have worked mainly with textiles since I feel this best suits my mode of expression. The use of textiles allows me to create a space whose dimensions I do not know when I start the work. I work without defined boundaries, cutting, tearing and sewing the textiles so that the size of the work is only determined on its completion. I work instinctively, responding to the textures and marks on the materials. I continue to display my works without frames, enabling them to appear without borders.

I use found textiles as the idea of recycling and reusing materials and giving them new leases of life is something I very much enjoy. I take great pleasure in hunting for different textiles which I then layer, mixing the opaque and the transparent to create depth and three dimensional effect. I work with a variety of media, drawing on the textiles with pencils, pastels, oil sticks and acrylic. I often print directly onto the material too. This process allows me to ‘excavate’ the layers of colour and form that belong to the textiles. The repetitive act of sewing serves as a form of meditation in contrast to the more spontaneous free expression of painting.

Beyond Boundaries (Belgium part 3)

Jette Clover has also work in both galleries
(High Five Art in Baarle Nassau and Galerie Zone in Leiden)

In other words

Collage

Cotton, screen-printed

Since the dawn of time mankind has been making marks yo communicate - from signs and symbols in early cave paintings to spray-painted messages on urban walls. I love living in the city with the haphazard layers of overlapping posers, faded advertisements, notes of missing pets and cryptic graffiti. Seeing the fragmented traces of text on the walls, makes me wonder about the traces I myself will be leaving behind and how they will be interpreted.

I was a journalist before I became an artist so text and language continue to be my main source of inspiration. I like words, because of their graphic quality and because of their ability to convey meaning. I print and screen letters on fabric, and stitching has become a new way of writing for me. Stitching resembles the rhythm of writing with a pen - slow, intimate process during which one becomes aware of the marking of time.

My work is collage constructions. I usually combine cotton, linen, cheese cloth and paper to which I apply a variety of surface design techniques, including dyeing, painting, discharge, printing, screening and rusting.

I could be painting with oil on canvas, but I like working in the textile medium, because of the tactile quality and because of its association with women’s work and history.

This piece can be seen in Baarle Nassau https://www.highfiveart.nl

The below work is on show in Leiden https://www.galeriezone.nl
