Beyond Boundaries (Belgium part 2)

Rita Trefois' work can be seen at both locations (Baarle Nassau and Leiden)

Harbor impression 2

Rita Trefois

Belgium

Batik

Cotton, reactive dyes, resin, plywood

Rita’s passion for batik grew from previous studies in textile chemistry and ornamental art in the early 1970s
and has fostered in her the conflict between technical skills and free creation.

A subtle balance between thirsty fabric, hot liquid wax and dye opened an exciting world for Rita, in which the technique was tested in all its facets.

Somewhere halfway, between skill and inspiration, she creates a field of tension where works of art flourish.

To this day she has been able to perfect her capability to capture her emotions in modern paintings.

She also likes to pass on her experiences during training courses and short workshops in her own studio or as a guest teacher at  home and abroad.

This Batik can be seen at High Five Art in Baarle Nassau

The below batik is on show in Leiden at Galerie Zone

Beyond Boundaries (Belgium part 1)

We have 3 Belgian entries: Jette Clover, Lia Flemings and Rita Trefois.

First I show you Lia Flemings' artwork

Duo

Lia Flemings

Belgium

Arashi shibori

Leather pigskin, acid dyed

I’m interested in a lot of techniques used in the world of textiles. My commitment is to make combinations of techniques to discover new possibilities in my artwork. The painting techniques often play a role.

Pig skin is  dyed with Acid dye after binding around a tube and after a long soak.

The bindings are released after dyeing.

There is variation in binding in the two skins.

Lia's work is on show in Baarle Nassau at the High Five Art Gallery.

Beyond Boundaries (Mel Bradley and Imelda Connolly from Ireland)

From Ireland - there are 2 participants, members of the Surface Design Association showing their work:

in Baarle Nassau at High Five Art Gallery https://www.highfiveart.nl
you can see the work from Mel Bradley

Hand-painted with fiber reactive dyes, discharge and overpainted

Silk/viscose velvet

My work is influenced by Japanese simplicity and the natural world which surround me.

I love drawing and painting circles. They give me a feeling of warmth and comfort, I feel safe within my circle.

A circle is a line which is infinite. A circle is a line in harmony. A circle is a line with limitless possibilities. A circle has no boundaries.

“Without our ecology we would cease to exist. All of my work is directly influenced by the natural world that surrounds me.  Every day I walk the beach and watch the sun rise, enjoy observing the birds feed, feel the energy of the sea and hear the shells crunch beneath my feet”.

in Leiden at Galerie Zone https://www.galeriezone.nl you will find the work from Imelda Connolly

The Cove
34x50cm

Fabric Collage with handstitching
recycled fabrics, wadding, cotton
threads, embroidery threads and
fabric paints.

I am a textile landscape artist whose work explores the borders between land, water, marshes, mountains and sky. I live in a marshland area in Ireland known as the Bog of Allan. The unique combination of plants, colours, textures and shapes found within this landscape and the surrounding mountains and rivers of Ireland are inspirational sources for my work. I use mixed media techniques including recycled fabrics and hand stitching to create these textural and 3D landscapes.

   Machine quilted, machine stitched

   Cotton, overprinted, dyed newspaper

I am a fiber artist living in Budapest, Hungary,

working with recycled paper, textiles and other

found soft materials. The basic process of creation is

machine-stitching, with additional elements of

printing dyeing and painting.

After having made art quilts for more than ten years,

my interest has turned to creating transparent wall-hangings,

objects and installations using ripped, overprinted newspaper.

In my recent lacy, transparent works capturing the play of

opaque and open elements plays an important role:

the shadow behind the work adds another layer of complexity.

Today I am showing artwork from Beverly Ayling-Smith
Text courtesy Helda Klouth https://www.highfiveart.nl

Migration

Beverly Ayling Smith

Great Britain

Hand-stitched

Cotton, silk thread

Beverly’s work focuses on the emotional dimensions in the words loss, absence and grief.

In this work ‘Migration’ she has used torn pieces of bed-sheet and clusters of stitch to suggest movement between emotional states and the negotiation of barriers, highlighting the difficulties encountered after bereavement.

ARTWORK BEYOND BOUNDARIES (NL)

As from today I am going to introduce and show the selected artworks in separate blog posts.
Nothing beats to see the work in person, so we encourage you to come and visit if possible.

All texts are courtesy of Helda Klouth (High Five Art) www.highfiveart.nl

I start with Paulien van Asperen

Accidental skylines

Paulien van Asperen

The Netherlands

Double weave on six blocks of five shafts
Linen, wool

Weaving gives me the opportunity to transform ideas, visual elements from the world around me and inspiration from art into actual woven fabric. Weaving, in my opinion, includes designing, converting the designs into technical weaving patterns and choosing the materials, textures and colours to achieve the effect that I want.

What really fascinates me are repetitive abstract elements that create movement and depth or even be optically misleading to the eye. To arrange these elements in colour and texture and shifting but repetitive patterns I find very exciting.
